Reflection Resources

The Reflection Resources provide practical, easy-to-use processes that help people step back from immediate reactions and reflect more thoughtfully before taking further action. Here, reflection doesn’t necessarily mean looking back after an event. It can also involve creating a brief pause part-way through a situation, or just before entering one, to notice more clearly what’s happening and considering how best to respond.

Whether used individually or with others, these resources create a brief but purposeful space to notice what’s going on, consider different perspectives, and identify constructive next steps.

The Personal Pause (OBREAU) supports individual reflection before, during or after a challenging situation, whilst the Collective Pause (OBREAU) helps groups reflect together on situations they have just experienced or are about to enter.

Personal Pause (OBREAU)

Inwardly focused – helping the individual step back and observe a current or emerging situation more carefully before deciding what’s best to do

When we’re under pressure, it’s easy to constrain our thinking: reacting quickly, jumping to conclusions, assuming we know what motivates others, and/or avoiding voicing what we might need to say. The Personal Pause is a brief practice that helps interrupt these patterns before they reassert themselves.

You might spend as little as a few minutes on the Pause, or longer for a deeper reflection.

Collective Pause (OBREAU)

Inwardly focused for the group – helping the group observe what is happening both internally and in its interactions with others, in the context of a current or emerging situation

When teams are under pressure, pausing to think together about their process consciously might not seem like an option. Yet even a brief Collective Pause can help people notice important aspects of how they work together and with others, as well as the surrounding circumstances, that they might otherwise not recognise.

The Collective Pause version described here is a short-form version designed to be undertaken in about 15 minutes.
